THOUGH THE ERA of truly huge away support was passing, there were still some games where we could get monstrous numbers into away grounds. At FA Cup matches, especially semi-finals, you were guaranteed a large ticket allocation, and in 1977 we played Leeds United in a semi at Hillsborough. It was so full I was locked out. It was unbelievable: we were playing Leeds in Yorkshire and we had three-quarters of the ground. One end was half United and half Leeds, and there was me stuck outside. What a bummer. There had already been fighting all the way to the ground and now it went off proper. We tried to kick in the gates but the coppers beat us back. In the end we had to disperse from around the ground but by then lots of Reds were up for it in their end. We could see them from outside making their move. George Lyons was the instigator.
